Interest in models that acknowledge the two-way coupling between human and environmental systems has grown steadily over the past few decades, and has accelerated, especially in recent years. Nevertheless, we still face many catastrophes that, in theory, may be avoidable. I will discuss simple mathematical models of human and environmental systems with and without two-way coupling to highlight this dilemma. In particular, I will highlight the vital roles of social learning and social norms as well as economic and non-economic factors, interdependently. I will conclude with a few words about future directions in this area. This presentation is based largely on joint work of the Anand and Bauch research groups.
